THE LONDON 2012 PARALYMPIC GAMES

There were some great moments for Team GB at the games, especially those competing for Get Kids Going! David Weir led the way with four gold medals, made even more remarkable by the fact that he won every event he entered in the T54 classification. Elsewhere on the track, Mickey Bushell won gold in the T53 100 metres, destroying the rest of the field in the process, although he wasn’t able to repeat that success in the 200 metres. Aled Davies came first in the F40 discus competition and to the delight of the crowd his medal was presented by the Duchess of Cambridge. His gold medal was in addition to the bronze he won in the men’s F40 shot put. Josie Pearson added to the flood of gold medals with success in the F51 discus. Both track and field competitions provided a steady flow of medals for GKG! In the archery competition, Danielle Brown confirmed her place as the world’s best Paralympic archer with a gold in the Compound bow final, beating her friend and great rival, Mel Clarke.

There was a silver medal success for Shelly Woods in the Marathon. Hopeful of winning medals on the track, Shelly left her best till last with a fantastic race, finishing in the Mall. However, there was still a slight disappointment that she hadn't been able to add to her medal tally in the Olympic Stadium previously. Matt Skelhon, proved once again that he is a crack shot. Picking up a silver and bronze in the shooting events. In the Mixed R3-10m Air Rifle Prone he got a fantastic second place and in the Mixed R6-50m Rifle Prone he added the bronze medal. The “Quadfather” of tennis, Peter Norfolk, bowed out of Paralympic competition with a silver medal in the quad doubles competition.

Jordanne Whiley celebrated further success in the tennis at Eton Manor with a bronze medal in the women’s doubles. On the ocean waves at Weymouth and Portland, Alex Rickham and Niki Birrell won a well-deserved bronze in the two-Person Keelboat (SKUD18) Sailing competition. Despite suffering a dislocated shoulder a few weeks prior to the games, Rachel Morris got a bronze medal in the women's individual H1-3 road race at Brands Hatch.

In the rowing at Eton Dorney, Tom Aggar was expected to get on the podium in the ASM single skull class, however, he had to settle for fourth place. Nathan Milgate wasn’t able to emulate the success of Matt Skelhon in the shooting competition at the Royal Artillery Barracks, finishing outside the top three places in the Men's R1-10m Air Rifle.

Louise Hunt and Gordon Reid couldn’t add further medals in the singles tennis competition and Sam Scott couldn’t help his teammates in the sitting volleyball. Helen Freeman competed in the team wheelchair basketball competition, but didn’t get on the podium. Wheelchair rugby “Murderball” provided plenty of excitement. However, Team GB were not able to add a medal in the event at the basketball arena, in the Olympic Park.

There was controversy in the F57/58 event with Nathan Stephens throwing the javelin. His first throw was ruled illegal and despite the judges reversing their decision later in the competition, it wasn’t enough to gain success. Ali Jawad missed out on the medals in the 56kg powerlifting at the Excel arena. Despite two successful lifts, his third was deemed illegal. Despite a successful challenge by the coach of Team GB he struggled in his retaken third lift and had to settle for fourth place.

Congratulations must go to Jamie Cater however, competing in his first Paralympic games he raced in both the T34 100 and 200 metres and his performances bode well for Rio 2016. Kyron Duke put in a very creditable performance in both the shot put and javelin in the men’s F40 class, throwing personal bests in both events. Holly Arnold performed well in the women’s F46 javelin, finishing well in fifth. Jess Hunter, Jacob Thomas and Scott McCowan competed in the BC3 Boccia event at the Excel and although they were expected to progress far in the competition they were not able to add to the overall medal tally.
