Biography - David Weir MBE
 
 


David was born in 1979 with a spinal cord transection and is paralysed from the waist down. David lives in Sutton, Surrey. At the age of 30yrs he is recognised as the World’s best wheelchair racing athlete.

David took Double Gold medals at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games in the T54 800m and 1500m following three Golds and a Silver at the 2006 International Paralympic Committee World Championships in Assen. He competed at his first Paralympics at the age of 17 in Atlanta in 1996.

David has won three London Marathon’s in a row with a fourth 2 years later – a total of 4 London Marathons. He came third in the 2010 London Wheelchair Marathon after getting two flat tyres! David has been supported by Get Kids Going! since the age of 15yrs with his bespoke racing wheelchairs and sports grants.

David became a Vice President of Get Kids Going! in 2008 after his famous victories in Beijing. He has set his sights on further success in London 2012 Paralympic Games.

David currently holds the British record at all track distances up to 5,000m as well as on the road at 10km, half marathon, and marathon.

David has won the Bupa Great North Run on several occasions including this year’s race on the 18th September 2010.

David also won the ING New York City Marathon 2010 on Sunday 7th November in a time of 1hr.37mins.29secs beating all other international rivals.

David has just won 3 gold medals at IPC World Paralympic Athletics Championships in New Zealand in January 2011 in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m

David is classed by the International Paralympic Committee as the World’s No.1 Wheelchair Racing Champion.
