Tokyo Marathon
The Tokyo Marathon is the 6th and newest of the Abbot Marathon Majors.
Starting at the Metropolitan Government Office, at 5km you’ll reach Chiyoda City the political centre of Japan where the Prime Minister resides.
Cheered by the enthusiastic Japanese crowds you may not even notice the magnificent Tokyo Sky Tree at 20km. At a height of 634m it is the second tallest man-made structure in the world standing proud at the heart of Sumida City, a mark of modern day Japan.
From the modern to the very traditional at 25km, the Tomioka Hachimango Shrine with its red walls and green shaped roof, its known as the birthplace of Kanjin-zum and the origin of the current professional Sumo sporting body.
After the marathon, you must come back and visit Ginza, the next area on the marathon route at 35km. It is the most famous shopping and entertainment district in Tokyo. Return and explore its buzzing streets in the day and neon illuminations at night.
Next, from the vibrant Japanese streets, you might be forgiven for thinking you were suddenly transported to running on Parisian highways at the sight of the Tokyo tower. Used for communications and observation, the structure is styled on the famous Eiffel tower in Paris, visually the same but much brighter with red and white horizontal stripes of colour.
The final part of the marathon takes you into the beautiful Hibiya Park, home to the Imperial Palace, where you’ll be granted a royal cheer by the local people, as you cross the finish line.
Steeped in history and bustling with modern day life, the Tokyo Marathon course symbolises the past, present and future of this great city.
Region – Only available to UK runners
