Decide who to include
When writing your Will, you choose the people and causes closest to you – family, friends and charities you wish to support. Those you name will become your beneficiaries.
Think about the Gifts you’d like to leave
These Gifts can take different forms:
A Residuary Gift is what remains of your estate once any taxes, debt, and / or other Gifts have been taken care of.
A Pecuniary Gift is a set amount of money.
A Specific Gift is a belonging or collection of belongings you’d like someone to receive.
Each type of Gift has its own advantages and you can choose the approach that feels right for you.

Appoint your executors
Executors are the people responsible for making sure your wishes are carried out. It can be a detailed process that may take a few weeks – many turn to trusted friends or family members. It’s usually best to appoint between two and four executors. If you prefer, you can employ a professional, such as a solicitor, and your friends or family may appoint one later if needed.
Valuing your estate
Your estate may include property, money in bank or savings accounts, investments such as stocks and shares, and personal belongings. From your estate, any outstanding bills, debts, or expenses will need to be deducted. In some cases, inheritance tax may also apply.

Accounting for inheritance tax
Inheritance tax is a tax charged, usually at 40%, on the value of your estate above a certain threshold. Please visit the HMRC website for the most up-to-date guidance.
Write your Will
It’s best to use a professional Will writer i.e. a solicitor, to make sure your wishes are set out clearly and legally. Your Will needs to be signed and witnessed, and it’s a good idea to keep copies somewhere safe and easy to find when needed.
Keep your Will current
It’s a good idea to review your Will if your circumstances change, to make sure it still reflects your wishes. Simple updates can often be made with a codicil, while bigger changes may require a new Will. If you do make a new Will, remember to destroy or clearly mark any earlier versions so there is no confusion.
