Another success for Shelly Woods at the ING New York Marathon!

Young athlete Shelly Woods, 23, raced for Get Kids Going! in the ING New York Marathon on rainy Sunday, November 1st, 2009. She came in seven seconds behind winner and Swiss Paralympic Champion Edith Hunkeler who had a time of 1hr 58min 22seconds.

Wheelchair racers usually peak in their late twenties and early thirties. Woods’ accomplishment of nearly beating a Paralympic marathong Champion at such a young age reinforces the young wheelchair athlete’s status as a rising star in the racing world.

Woods told Gareth Davies from the Telegraph that “I was delighted with the performance because we really pushed Edith hard and that is the closest I’ve ever come to beating her here”. Edith has been ING New York Marathon champion for four consecutive years. The Get Kids Going! team is very proud of Shelly and is excited to continue to support her in her future races.
